Tennessee Summer Institute

I’m in final preparations mode for my opening keynote and then 2 more days of hands-on workshops for the Tennessee e-Learning Summer Institute which is being co-hosted by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) and the University of Memphis.

  • WHEN: June 25-27, 2008
  • WHERE: University of Memphis FedEx Center
  • WHO: open to all TBR faculty and staff members.
  • TAG: TBR08 (Twitter hashtag:  #TBR08)

Over the course of the three days (2.5 actually) there will be three keynotes and at least 21 breakout sessions which I believe will all be hands-on. My keynote on Wednesday morning will be followed by Clarence Maise, Instructional Designer, University of Missouri St. Louis on Thursday morning and then by Michael Grant of the University of Memphis on Friday morning.

I will be working with the attendees on the following breakout sessions:

  • Digital photos and editing tools
  • Zoho collaborative tools: Writer, Sheet, Show, and Creator
  • Zoho Notebook
  • Google Notebook and iGoogle
  • UStream.tv and other live broadcast tools
  • SlideShare, Slide.com, and other SlideShow tools
  • Cartoons and Comic Strips

I took the liberty of creating the word cloud at the top of the post as a way of highlighting many of the features of the Summer Institute, not the least of which I’m expecting will include some Blues and BBQ!! Word cloud created at Wordle.net (it’s a little too much fun).

Shopping for a New Title

LSC logo Since we’ve recently renamed our Virtual Campus at Lake Superior College, I need to come up with a new title. My current title is Vice President of Technology and the Virtual Campus. I’m also designated as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the college which puts me in the campus CIO group within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MNSCU).

I’ve never felt that CIO is a very good descriptor for the work I do. I’m not responsible for information in all its forms, especially not for public information and not even for student record information and the like. I heard back from the MnSCU CIO that there is no requirement to use the CIO designator so I would like to start using the designation of Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Now the question is whether CTO should be part of the new title or not. You’ll notice that CIO is not an official part of my current title, but should it be?

Here are a few possibilities:

  • Vice President of Lake Superior Connect
  • Vice President of Technology and the e-Campus
  • Vice President and Chief Technology Officer
  • Vice President of Lake Superior College e-Campus
  • Vice President of LSC e-Campus

Just to clarify, Lake Superior Connect is the name (think brand name) instead of the Virtual Campus. We are going away completely from using the term Virtual Campus. Instead we will call it an e-Campus which is more of a descriptor rather than a name.

One way of saying it to be descriptive would be to say that the new name of our e-Campus is Lake Superior Connect. Just to put one more spin on it: Lake Superior Connect is like Kleenex (brand) and e-Campus is like tissue paper (what it is).

I need help here. Which one is best?

A New Home

My first blog, Far From A Shining Star, has been shuttered. The content will remain but no new posts willTurn-it-off be made. Instead, this will be the  new home and general jumping off point for most of the things that I blog about.

One concern I have is how people will find my new blog. Many people found my old blog by search engines (96% of the time they used Google). These were the search terms most often used that I led people to my blog:

  1. Stupid signs (now there is a blog just for that)
  2. Funny signs (see above)
  3. Club Penguin (a post containing a video)
  4. Turnitin Sucks (1st post) (it still sucks) (click graphic too)
  5. Top Web Tools (several posts)

Hopefully people who find the old blog by searching will find their way to the new blog. And now that I have the bulleted list above, they’ll also start to find this blog when they search for those same terms.

Welcome to Barry Dahl dot com

This is the new home for all web things related to Barry Dahl. This site will take the place of one of my previous blogs (Far From A Shining Star) as well as serve as the single source for all information related to my speaking engagements and other activities.
